Yellow stains on pillows are one of the most common bedding complaints, and the right pillow protector is the best way to prevent them. Once yellowing sets into a pillow, it is extremely difficult to remove completely. Prevention costs a fraction of the price of replacing stained pillows every few months. Here is what causes pillow yellowing, how protectors prevent it, and what to do if your pillows are already discoloured.
What Causes Yellow Pillow Stains
Sweat
Night sweat is the primary cause of pillow yellowing. Adults produce 200 to 700 millilitres of sweat during a typical night of sleep, with a significant portion coming from the head and neck. Sweat contains urea, salt, and trace minerals. As sweat soaks into the pillow fill and dries, these dissolved compounds remain behind and oxidise, creating yellow-brown discolouration. The staining is cumulative β each night adds another layer that darkens over weeks and months.
Body Oils (Sebum)
Your scalp and face produce sebum (natural skin oil) continuously, including during sleep. Sebum soaks through pillowcases and into pillow fills where it oxidises over time, contributing to yellowing. People with oily skin or those who apply facial moisturisers, serums, or hair products before bed accelerate this process because additional oil and product residue transfer to the pillow surface.
Saliva
Drooling during sleep is more common than most people realise, particularly among side sleepers and those with nasal congestion. Saliva contains proteins and enzymes that leave stains when they dry. Repeated saliva exposure in the same area creates concentrated yellow patches, usually on the front edge of the pillow.
Moisture and Humidity
Ambient bedroom humidity can cause moisture to condense inside the pillow, especially in unheated rooms during cold months. Dampness promotes bacterial growth and mould, both of which produce yellow or brown discolouration alongside musty odours. Poorly ventilated bedrooms and foam pillows that do not breathe well are most susceptible.
How Pillow Protectors Prevent Yellowing
A waterproof or water-resistant pillow protector creates a physical barrier between the pillow fill and all the substances that cause yellowing. Sweat, oils, saliva, and moisture soak into the protector fabric instead of penetrating the pillow. Because the protector is machine-washable, you remove these substances every two to four weeks before they accumulate and oxidise.
The key is the waterproof membrane. A basic cotton protector without a membrane slows the transfer of liquids but does not stop it. Over months, sweat and oil will soak through an unlined protector and reach the pillow fill. For genuine yellow-stain prevention, you need a protector with a polyurethane or TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) membrane backing.
TPU membranes are the current standard. Thinner and more breathable than older polyurethane laminates, TPU blocks all liquid transfer while allowing water vapour (from breath and body heat) to pass through. The result is a protector that stops staining without making the pillow feel hot or sweaty.

Best Protector Types for Stain Prevention
Full-Zip Encasement with TPU Membrane
The most effective option. A zippered encasement covers every surface of the pillow, including the sides and bottom. No liquid can reach the pillow from any direction. Full encasements also block dust mites and allergens, providing dual-purpose protection. Ideal for memory foam and latex pillows that cannot be machine-washed if they do get stained.
Envelope-Style with Waterproof Top
Covers the top and sides with a waterproof layer but leaves the bottom open via a tuck-under flap. Easier to put on and remove than a zippered encasement. Provides good protection for the sleep surface where most staining occurs, but the open bottom means spills or heavy sweating can still reach the underside. Better than no protector, but not as comprehensive as a full encasement.
Protector Materials That Work Best
Cotton terry with TPU backing is the most popular choice. The terry surface absorbs moisture gently while the membrane prevents it from passing through. Feels soft and comfortable under a standard pillowcase.
Bamboo rayon with TPU backing adds moisture-wicking performance, pulling sweat away from the surface and spreading it across a wider area for faster evaporation. Particularly useful for heavy sweaters or hot sleepers using cooling pillows.
Tencel (lyocell) with TPU backing combines smooth feel, excellent moisture management, and waterproof protection. The premium option in terms of both comfort and price.
What to Do with Already-Yellow Pillows
For machine-washable pillows (most polyester and microfibre and some down and feather options), try this approach: dissolve one cup of baking soda and half a cup of white vinegar in the washing machine with hot water. Add the pillow and run on the longest cycle available. Follow with an extra rinse. Tumble dry with two clean tennis balls to restore loft.
For non-washable foam pillows, spot-treat stains with a paste of baking soda and water. Apply to the stained area, leave for 30 minutes, then vacuum off. Repeat if needed. Deep stains in foam are extremely difficult to remove because the yellowing happens throughout the material, not just on the surface.
