Outdoor cushions face rain, UV radiation, temperature swings, mould, bird droppings, and insect activity that indoor cushions never encounter. Using indoor pillow fabrics and fills outdoors leads to rapid deterioration: faded colours within weeks, mould growth inside damp fills, and fabric breakdown that leaves you replacing cushions every season. Choosing purpose-built outdoor materials means your patio furniture stays comfortable and attractive through multiple British summers. Here is what to look for.

Outdoor Fabric Types

Solution-Dyed Acrylic (Sunbrella)

Solution-dyed acrylic is the gold standard for outdoor cushion fabric. Sunbrella is the most recognised brand, but several manufacturers produce equivalent fabrics. Solution-dyed means the colour is added to the acrylic fibre while it is still liquid, before it becomes thread. The colour runs through the entire fibre rather than sitting on the surface, making it extremely fade-resistant even under direct UV exposure for years.

Solution-dyed acrylic repels water (droplets bead on the surface), resists mould growth, and cleans easily with mild soap and water. The fabric breathes well, so it does not feel clammy in warm weather. The trade-off is price: Sunbrella and equivalent fabrics cost significantly more than polyester or cotton alternatives. For cushions that stay outdoors throughout the UK summer (April to September), this investment pays for itself in years of service rather than seasonal replacement.

Polyester with Water-Resistant Coating

Coated polyester offers a budget-friendly alternative to solution-dyed acrylic. The polyester base provides decent UV resistance (less than acrylic but better than cotton), while the water-resistant coating on the underside prevents rain from soaking through immediately. Coated polyester cushions withstand occasional showers but should not be left out in sustained rain because the coating degrades over time and eventually fails.

For covered patios, balconies with overhead protection, and conservatories, coated polyester provides good value. For fully exposed garden furniture with no overhead shelter, invest in solution-dyed acrylic instead.

Olefin (Polypropylene)

Olefin fabric resists moisture, mould, and staining at a lower price than acrylic. Colours are solution-dyed, providing good fade resistance. Olefin feels slightly rougher than acrylic and does not breathe as well in hot weather. It works well for seat cushions and back cushions on garden chairs where comfort expectations are moderate.

Outdoor Fill Materials

Indoor cushion fills (down, feather, standard polyester) absorb water, dry slowly, and develop mould inside outdoor cushions. Outdoor-specific fills solve these problems.

Quick-dry polyester fibre has an open structure that allows water to drain through the fill rather than being absorbed. After a rain shower, a quick-dry cushion can be stood on its edge and shaken, and most water drains out within minutes. Full drying takes a few hours in the open air rather than the days that standard polyester requires.

Reticulated foam is open-celled foam with large, interconnected air pockets. Water passes through reticulated foam freely, making it the fastest-drying fill material available. Reticulated foam is more expensive than quick-dry polyester but provides better cushioning and maintains its shape longer. Use it for seat cushions where comfort matters most. Throw pillow sized accent cushions can use quick-dry polyester fill since they bear less weight.

Choosing the Right Outdoor Cushion

Match cushion type to furniture type. Seat cushions for dining chairs need firm, thick fills (8 to 10 cm) that provide support during meals without compressing flat. Back cushions can be softer and thinner. Lounge chair cushions should be thick and soft (10 to 15 cm) for extended relaxation. Decorative outdoor throw pillows (40 to 50 cm square) add colour and comfort to outdoor sofas and chairs.

Size matters for fit. Outdoor furniture dimensions vary more than indoor furniture because there are no standard sizing conventions across manufacturers. Measure your furniture seat and back dimensions before buying cushions. Many garden furniture brands sell matching cushions specifically sized for their chairs and sofas. Generic cushions may leave gaps or overhang the furniture frame.

UV Protection and Colour Fading

Even the best outdoor fabrics fade eventually under sustained UV exposure. South-facing patios receive the most intense UK sunlight and cause the fastest fading. Dark and vibrant colours (red, blue, black) show fading more obviously than light and muted colours (beige, grey, sage). Solution-dyed acrylic maintains colour for five to eight years in UK conditions. Coated polyester fades noticeably after two to three seasons.

Store outdoor cushions indoors or in a weatherproof storage box during winter (October to March in the UK) to extend fabric life. Continuous outdoor exposure through winter adds months of unnecessary UV damage and rain exposure. Even during summer, bringing cushions inside during extended periods of disuse (holidays, weekdays when the patio is unused) reduces cumulative UV exposure.

Mould Prevention

UK weather creates ideal conditions for mould growth: damp air, moderate temperatures, and limited sunlight. Outdoor cushions stored in damp sheds, stacked wet, or left on furniture during rainy spells develop mould inside the fill and on fabric surfaces. Prevention is far easier than removal.

Stand cushions on edge after rain to maximise air circulation and drainage. Never stack wet cushions flat because the trapped moisture between layers creates mould within 48 hours. Store cushions in ventilated spaces rather than sealed plastic boxes (which trap moisture). If mould does appear, scrub with a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water, rinse thoroughly, and dry completely in sunlight before use. Our pillow care guide covers mould treatment for all fabric and fill types.

Removable outdoor covers simplify cleaning because you can wash the cover separately from the fill. For outdoor floor cushions and outdoor bolsters, removable covers are especially important because ground-contact cushions collect more dirt and moisture than elevated furniture cushions.
